1. About the battery
* The battery must be fully-charged before using for the first time, or after you have not used it for a long time (the battery should be charged at least every six months). This can typically take around four (4) hours.
* The battery can be fully re-charged at least 500 times, but after long-term use the battery performance will begin to decline.
* The unit may be re-charged at any time, including during game play. However, re-charging during game play will take longer.
* When recharging the battery, use only the Nintendo DS Lite AC Adapter, Model No. USG-002.
2. Adjust screen brightness
1.Remove all games from the Nintendo DS.
2.Turn the system on by pressing the POWER button.
3.Tap the screen using the stylus when the "Touch the Touch Screen to continue" message appears.
4.Tap the brightness icon (small sun) in the bottom left square of the lower screen to adjust the screens' brightness.
3. Inserting and starting a game
A. Basic Setup
Inserting and playing a Nintendo DS Game Card game
1.If this is the first time you are using your Nintendo DS Lite, make sure the internal battery is fully charged before using.
2.Make sure that the power is turned OFF on the Nintendo DS Lite.
3.With the game's label side facing down, insert a DS Game Card into the DS Game Card Slot (SLOT-1), and slide it into place until it clicks. DO NOT FORCE the Game Card into the slot on the Nintendo DS. The Game Card will load easily when inserted correctly.
4.Carefully lift up the screen into the open position.
5.Press up on the power switch (located on the right side of the Nintendo DS Lite), to turn the power ON.
6.Tap the screen using the stylus when the "Touch the Touch Screen to continue" message appears. You can also push the A Button, instead.
* If the system settings are set to Automatic Start-Up, the game will automatically load. If both a DS Game Card and an AGB Game are inserted, only the DS Game Card will load. If you wish to play the AGB Game, you will need to remove the DS Game Card.
* If the system settings are set to Manual Start-Up, you will see indicators for the DS Game Card slot and the Game Pak slot. Tap the stylus within the card slot indicator window (the rectangle) to start the game.
4. Changing "Start-up Mode" (switching between "Automatic" or "Manual" play)
Users can set the Nintendo DS Lite for a "Manual" or "Automatic" setting. With the Manual setting, the main menu will be displayed when the Nintendo DS Lite is turned on. This allows the user to access the DS menu functions (such as changing settings or using PictoChat). With the Automatic setting, if a Nintendo DS Game Card is inserted into the system, the game will automatically boot up when the Nintendo DS Lite is turned on, bypassing the main menu functions. To switch between Manual or Automatic:
1.Remove all games from the Nintendo DS.
2.Turn the system on by pressing up on the POWER switch.
3.Tap the screen using the stylus when the "Touch the Touch Screen to continue" message appears.
4.When the main menu appears, tap the stylus on the Settings Menu Panel at the bottom middle part of the screen.
5.Tap the Options icon.
6.Tap the Start-up Mode icon.
7.Tap the top box for "M Manual Mode" or the bottom box for "A Auto Mode" and tap the "Confirm" rectangle.
8.Wait for the confirmation message to disappear, then tap "Go Back," then "Quit," then "Yes" to exit. The unit will shut down automatically to save the settings.
5. Removing a Nintendo DS Game Card
To remove the game card, press down slightly on the Game Card in the DS Game Card Slot. The card should spring up slightly. Grab the card by the edge and remove it from the system.
1. Touch Screen doesn't respond or is inaccurate when touched
Be sure that you're using only the bottom screen of the Nintendo DS Lite with the stylus. The upper screen is not a touch screen.
Unlicensed screen protectors can lower the sensitivity of the touch screen. If the problem you are experiencing started happening after you attached a screen protector, you may want to remove it. Please note that some screen protectors can leave behind a residue that may be difficult to clean.
If the touch screen is not responding when touched, or the accuracy of the screen is off, you may need to recalibrate the touch screen. If none of the steps above solve the problem, your system will need to be repaired.
2. Nintendo DS Lite - Lines on the Screen
If you see lines on either screen of your Nintendo DS Lite during game play, then it is likely one or more of the components that create the image on the screen are damaged. This usually occurs if there has been an impact -- such as being dropped or hit -- to the Nintendo DS Lite's screens. Your Nintendo DS Lite system will need to be repaired.Important Note: If you are seeing lines on the screen that slowly fade away after turning off the system, this is normal.
3. Power and Battery Problems
Power and battery problems can display several different symptoms and may include many different troubleshooting or repair options. Please select the type of problem that best describes what your system is experiencing.
If your systems charge light does come on when the AC Adapter is plugged into the wall, but the charge does not last as long as it used to when the AC Adapter is unplugged, you may need to replace the battery. If you are unable to get the charge or power lights on the Nintendo DS Lite (diagram) to come on, even when the system is plugged in, please use the troubleshooting on this page. Ensure that you are properly recharging the battery.
Check the AC Adapter for damage (such as bent prongs or split wires). If you see damage to the AC Adapter, we suggest you to purchase a new one.
Try plugging the AC Adapter into another wall outlet. It's possible the outlet is not working properly and has not been charging the Nintendo DS Lite.
If possible, try another AC Adapter on your Nintendo DS Lite. If the power or charge light comes on, then you will need to replace the AC Adapter.
If you are unable to get power to your Nintendo DS Lite, despite trying to properly recharge the unit, then your system will need to be repaired.
4. No sound through speakers
Please try the following troubleshooting steps:
Make sure nothing is inserted into the headphone port.
Check the volume control on the bottom of the system to make sure it's not all the way to the left.
Check the settings of the game you are playing to make sure any sound options are set correctly. If none of the steps above solve the problem, your system will need to be repaired.
5. No Sound Through Headphones
Please try the following troubleshooting steps:
Check the volume control on the bottom of the system to make sure it's not all the way to the left.
Remove the headphones from the headphone connector. If you can hear sounds through the DS Lite's speakers, then the problem is likely with the headphones, and they should be replaced.
If possible, try another set of headphones. The Nintendo DS Lite uses a 3.5mm jack, which is standard. If it works with another set of headphones, then the problem is with the headphones.
Check the volume control on the bottom of the system to make sure it's not all the way to the left.If none of the steps above solve the problem, your system will need to be repaired.
While portable systems are designed for durability, they still remain complex electronic devices. As such, care needs to be taken with how they are handled. The following are tips to care for your system:
Cleaning a dirty screen
If the screen on your portable system (including either screen of a Nintendo DS system) has visible smudges, fingerprints, or other foreign material, you can clean it by using a soft clean cloth such as a lens or eyeglass cleaning cloth.
Slightly dampen a corner of the cloth with water and wipe off the screens to loosen any dirt or foreign material. Using a dry portion of the same cloth, wipe the screens to dry them and finish the cleaning process.
If needed, repeat the process more than once.
Please note: Protective screen covers can lower the sensitivity of the Nintendo DS touch screen. They may also damage screens as they can leave behind a residue that may be difficult to clean.
Minimize direct impact to the system
Your portable system should never be left anywhere where it could get hit, dropped, or banged around (e.g., in a backpack). While well protected, the sophisticated screens and internal components can be damaged by direct physical impact. An extra protective carrying case can often help prevent problems related to impact damage. Many times the initial damage is not noticeable to the naked eye, but over time (like a small chip in a windshield), a crack, line, or more damage can appear.
Avoid exposing the battery to liquids
The rechargeable lithium ion batteries featured in most newer portable devices are very sensitive to moisture. If the battery is exposed to liquids, it will be permanently damaged.
